Supporting safe and compliant workplaces

A respirator can only protect a worker if it fits the face correctly. Facial shape, respirator style, work tasks and maintenance all influence how well a mask fits and performs. Mask fit testing checks the seal between the respirator and the wearer’s face, so organisations can reduce exposure risks and meet their WHS obligations.

Fit testing is recognised under Australian Standards AS/NZS 1715:2009.

This standard outlines the selection, use and maintenance of respiratory protective equipment. It applies across:

What happens during a mask fit test?

A mask fit test checks whether the wearer’s respirator creates an adequate seal between their face and the mask.

During testing, the wearer will be asked to perform simple movements and breathing patterns while our testing equipment measures the effectiveness of the seal.

This process helps confirm:

  • The respirator mask is the correct type and size
  • The mask is functioning as intended
  • The wearer knows how to position and adjust the mask correctly

Our RPE tests include a printed copy of the results, which can be added to the worker’s employment file or within their onboarding documentation.

Frequently asked Questions

Some of the most frequently asked questions about respirator fit testing.

Why do I need mask fit testing?

Mask fit testing determines whether a respirator mask is sealing properly on the wearer’s face. Without a correct seal, hazardous particles could enter the mask and reduce its effectiveness, putting the wearer's health and safety at risk. RPE Fit testing helps PCBU:

  • Choose the correct respirator style and size for their workers

  • Reduce the risk of exposure in high-hazard environments

  • Meet their compliance requirements under AS/NZS 1715:2009

  • Support safe and proper use of PPE as part of their WHS program

How often should respirator fit testing be done?

We recommended that respiratory fit testing be completed:

  • When a new worker is onboarded

  • At least once every two years, in line with industry best-practice guidelines

  • When a worker is issued new PPE

  • If a worker’s facial features change, such as from weight fluctuation or facial hair

  • When respirator models or brands change

Routine testing of respiratory masks and other PPE gives PCBUs peace of mind that equipment performs as it’s intended.
